“Generations” Sculptures for Richard Artschwager, 1991

Mison Concepts worked on the engineering, custom stainless steel fabrication and integrated lighting system for famed artist Richard Artschwager’s site-specific sculptures, “Generations,” commissioned for the plaza of the University of Madison-Wiscon’s campus art museum. In addition to working as metal contractors, our traditional area of expertise, the artworks called for living pine trees to become part of the product, so our production efforts expanded to include the careful dynamics of plant life, developing enclosures that would be able to sustain and withstand the natural processes of growth and decay. Each tree was then paired with custom light fixtures, shaped like glowing spheres, which rose above the sculptures to illuminate the piazza.
